Also, some school systems are talking about top student performance salary incentives for teachers.Tax Credit Increase for Tuition Tax CreditPresident Obama Of course, the education race doesnt end with a high school diploma. To compete, higher education must be within reach of every American. Thats why wev e ended the unwarranted taxpayer subsidies that went to banks, and used the savings to make college affordable for millions of students. And this year, I ask Congress to go further, and make permanent our tuition tax credit worth $10,000 for four years of college.Kathryns Comment After this speech, education will be critical to succeed in these industries. Government jobs sometimes offer tuition reimbursement for students and parents who have student loans. Ask for this if you get a job offer.Train for New Jobs and Careers in Todays Fast-Changing EconomyPresident Obama Because people need to be able to train for new jobs and careers in todays fast-changing economy, we are also revitalizing Americas community colleges. Last month, I saw the promise of these schools at Forsyth Tech in North Carolina. Many of the students there used to work in the surrounding factories that have since left town. One mother of two, a woman named Kathy Proctor, had worked in the furniture industry since she was 18 years old. And she told me shes earning her degree in biotechnology now, at 55 years old, not just because the furniture jobs are gone, but because she wants to inspire her children to pursue their dreams too. As Kathy said, I hope it tells them to never give up.Kathryns Comment As jobseekers, continue to train to support these new industries. New training and education will be critical for career success. Tonight, Im proposing that we redouble these efforts.We will put more Americans to work repairing crumbling roads and bridges. America is the nation that built the transcontinental railroad, brought electricity to rural communities, and constructed the interstate highway system. As we speak, routes in California and the Midwest are already underway.Kathryns Comment Again, the President is envisioning a new US-wide industry that will create jobs for many skills, including trades, engineering, administration, customer services, purchasing.High Speed Wireless to 98% of Business, Faster Internet Into Digital AgePresident Obama Within the next five years, we will make it possible for business to deploy the next generation of high-speed wireless coverage to 98% of all Americans. This isnt just about a faster internet and fewer dropped calls. Its about connecting every part of America to the digital age. Its about a rural community in Iowa or Alabama where farmers and small business owners will be able to sell their products all over the world. Its about a firefighter who can download the desig n of a burning building onto a handheld device a student who can take classes with a digital textbook or a patient who can have face-to-face video chats with her doctor.All these investments in innovation, education, and infrastructure will make America a better place to do business and create jobs. Already, our exports are up. Recently, we signed agreements with India and China that will support more than 250,000 jobs in the United States. And last month, we finalized a trade agreement with South Korea that will support at least 70,000 American jobs. This agreement has unprecedented support from business and labor Democrats and Republicans, and I ask this Congress to pass it as soon as possible.Kathryns Comment grenzberschreitend business development will be growing in the near future. International studies, language , and contracting skills will be required for jobs in exporting goods to South Korea.Pursue Agreements with Panama Asia Pacific for JobsPresident Obama Before I took office, I made it clear that we would enforce our trade agreements, and that I would only sign deals that keep faith with American workers, and promote American jobs. Thats what we did with Korea, and thats what I intend to do as we pursue agreements with Panama and Colombia, and continue our Asia Pacific and global trade talks.Kathryns Comment International studies will be important for global business development.Freeze Government Spending for Five YearsPr esident Obama So tonight, I am proposing that starting this year, we freeze annual domestic spending for the next five years. This would reduce the deficit by more than $400 billion over the next decade, and will bring discretionary spending to the lowest share of our economy since Dwight Eisenhower was president.Kathryns Comment Even with possible government spending freezes, the government will be hiring more workers to support grants and programs for all of the ideas presented in this speech. Engineers, international experts, contract specialists, IT specialists, administrative, accounting, and many professionals will be needed to support the numerous growth career and industry areas. The government is very interested in hiring new graduates to grow into these new industries.Freeze Federal Salaries for the Next Two YearsPresident Obama This freeze will require painful cuts. Already, we have frozen the salaries of hardworking federal employees for the next two years. Ive proposed cuts to things I care deeply about, like community action programs.Kathryns Comment The salaries will be frozen, but the career ladder positions in government will still get promotions. The government jobs are still the best in the country with excellent benefits and programs. The performance-based promotions to new grades will still be available to employees.Department of Defense FreezePresident Obama The Secretary of Defense has also agreed to cut tens of billions of dollars in spending that he and his generals believe our military can do without.Kathryns Comment Even with DOD freeze and cuts, there will still be DOD jobs to support the warfighters and Defense operations. The jobs could be less, but the positions will be available due to retirements, BRAC, and other reorganizations in DOD agencies and military bases.Make Government More EfficientPresident Obama Let me take this one step further. We shouldnt just give our people a government thats more affordable. We should give th em a government thats more competent and efficient. We cannot win the future with a government of the past.Kathryns Comment If you have been efficient in your career, when you write your resume, add your efficiency ideas, programs, and projects. This could help you to stand out as an excellent candidate for a government job. I will submit that proposal to Congress for a vote and we will push to get it passed.We live and do business in the information age, but the last major reorganization of the government happened in the age of black and white TV. There are twelve different agencies that deal with exports. There are at least five different entities that deal with housing policy. Then theres my favorite example the Interior Department is in charge of salmon while theyre in fresh water, but the Commerce Department handles them in when theyre in saltwater. And I hear it gets even more complicated once theyre smoked.Kathryns Comment When agencies reorganize, they also create many new positions with newly-structured departments. Watch the news for the new agencies that are restructured or blended.The American DreamPresident Obama That dream that American Dream is what drove the Allen Brothers to reinvent their roofing company for a new era. Its what drove those students at Forsyth Tech to learn a new skill and work towards the future. The most effective entrepreneurs who Ive met care deeply about some mission, some change that theyre trying to create. Often they dont even start because theyre trying to create a company. The entrepreneurs who build things that last for a long time keep going because they care fundamentally about the change that they are trying to create in the world.Innovation for social impact was on broad display at ASMEs 2016 ISHOW programs. In Bangalore, Nairobi, and most recently in Washington D. C., some of the worlds brightest young engineer-entrepreneurs gathered to share their work and compete for funding, prizes and expert guidance. Each one is working to create real change in the world even as they also build successful businesses. In 2016, ASMEs ISHOW competitions in India, Kenya and the U.S. attracted visionary engineer-entrepreneurs who work to solve the developing worlds most pressing health and environmental challenges. In June, ISHOW came to Washington, D.C., and three winners were crowned. (The ISHOW finalists in India and Kenya were no less driven in their endeavors however editorial constraints confine this discussion to one venue.)Putting People at the Center of TechnologyAmparo (which means support in Portuguese) was one of the three D.C. winners. Their team developed a revolutionary approach to prosthetic care, reducing the time and training needed to fit a top-quality prosthetic socket. Amparo is now deploying this proprietary technology to underserved po pulations in Brazil to allow an amputee to be fit with a modern, durable, and reliable prosthetic not in months but hurs. Amparos Jessica Menhold, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering at Penn State, made the teams presentation.Whats key to our motivation is that we want to help people, said Menhold. People are at the center of our product. Were designing a device that connects the human to the artificial.Menhold showed a photograph of a Brazilian amputee, Lucas, and translated his words I cant work with my hands when Im wearing crutches, Lucas said. If I cant work with my hands, I cant hold a job. My leg is my whole life.Menhold turned off her projector. That is Amparos whole reason for existing, she said. We believe that no amputee deserves to live and walk around on crutches. And thats why were designing simple prosthetic devices that empower amputees to walk. Her passion was obvious and her team was victorious. The second of the D.C. winners for 2016 was Calliope Waterwo rks, maker of a water management tool called the Buoy. Calliopes founder and CEO Keri Waters, a serial entrepreneur with a BS in mechanical engineering from MIT and an MBA from UC Berkeley, came up to describe it.The Buoy installs in-line with a homes water main and provides real-time information about water flow, allowing owners to remotely shut off water via an app when leaks are detected, she grinned. Waters eyes shone as she spoke. This ability allows owners to reduce their overall water use by 10% even without making any behavioral changesBut the Buoy does more than that, she told the audience. It ships info to our computers, which can disaggregate information about water use and thus tell you for what different purposes youre using different amounts of water, when youre using it, and so on.The Buoy gives homeowners, for the very first time, the fine-grained information needed to plan water-budgeting decisions. It may well be the leading edge of a revolution in how we manage w ater.By vermgenly reducing water consumption everywhere its used, The Buoy would also have a direct benefit on water quality in all those places. Waters eyes had been shining for good reason her team is working to save the worlds water by building a strong business to do it.Cleaning the AirThe third champion of this years D.C. ISHOW was PayGo Energy, maker of the PayGo Smart Meter. The device couples to any LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinder to enable micro-asset financing and pay-as-you-go functionality for families in Kenya (and eventually around the world) who have never before been equipped to cook with gas.CEO Nick Quintong described how his team was inspired to create the PayGo It came from watching people use dirty, polluting fuels in Nairobi, he said. If you live on less than $2 a day and have a limited energy spend, you can purchase 50 cents worth of charcoal or 30 cents worth of kerosene. But you cant purchase 30 cents worth of gas.But his team saw a solution At PayGo , we developed a smart meter technology that couples to any gas cylinder, and it turns that cylinder into a pay-as-you-go device. For the first time, you can purchase just the fuel you need for that day, to cook. You can purchase 20 cents of fuel just to cook a single meal, or you can purchase more, depending on what your needs are.Quintong explained both the potential market for a clean-cooking-fuel solution and why the team was so excited about their project The potential impact is huge, said Quintong. Some 2.8 billion people are cooking with dirty fuels every day. And about 4.3 million people are dying every year from household air pollution more than tuberculosis, HIV and malaria combined. All these people are exposed to these hazardous fumes purely because gas is priced and packaged for wealthy populations, not for low income households.If Quintong and his team succeed, they will save untold numbers of lives around the world and they just may strike business gold doing so. Too early, and the question looks presumptuous.Thats the thorny patch that, Taylor Byrnes, a woman in Winnipeg, fell into this week. She asked about pay after her first vorstellungsgesprch, at which point the company representative, offended, cancelled her second interview.Byrnes tweeted about the experience, and it became a viral sensation, capturing the frustration of many job candidates who have trouble with salary negotiations.Heres what happened.After an initial phone interview at SkipTheDishes, an online food delivery service that operates in Canada and the U.S., Byrnes had decided to email human resources about benefits and her potential salary It was here where things went awry for Byrnes. Your priorities about pay are not in sync with those of SkipTheDishesByrnes emailed SkipTheDishes, how much do you think Ill be getting paid an hour? Benefits will also be included, right?She didnt get the answer she wanted.In her reply to Byrnes, Victoria Karras, a talent acquisition coordinator for the company, cancelled the next interview, saying, your questions reveal that your priorities are not in sync with those of SkipTheDishes.In a follow-up email to Byrnes, Karras expanded on what exactly those priorities were Our corporate culture may be unique in this way, but it is paramount that staff display intrinsic motivation and are proven self-starters. For these reasons, questions about compensation and benefits at such an early stage is a concern related to organizational fit.Some on Twitter followedByrnes call to boycott SkipTheDishes, believingthat asking about benefits was the sign of a motivated person. To count an interviewerout for asking about pay was a red flag about th e companys labor practices, they argued.SkipTheDishes apologizes, offers Byrnes that second interviewAfter Byrnes experience went viral, SkipTheDishes co-founder Joshua Simair wrote a statement explaining how the company had been wrong.We are very disappointed in how it was handled. We do share a compensation package prior to hiring. As soon as we became aware of it on Monday, we reached out to Taylor to apologize for the email and reschedule her interview, he said, adding that staff would receive additional training.How SkipTheDishes couldve handled this betterThere are takeaways for job seekers and employers with this story.For companies and hiring managers dont treat pay as a frivolous question. Its a core parte of why people work. SkipTheDishes should have reframed their tone. If Karrasreally felt that pressed about the salary question, shecould have just told Byrnes that this was not an appropriate time to ask about salary and left it at that. There was no need for backhanded i nsults about an applicant needing to show intrinsic motivation - especially in an email which could be taken as a screenshot and distributed all over the internet, as this one was.Human resources departmentsare often the first impression a job seeker has of a company. Give a bad impression and your company may get dragged on Twitter.This question could also have been avoided if SkipTheDishes had included more information about the positions salary to signal what kind of applicants they were looking for. A quick line about pay commensurate with experience can go a long way. The CEO himself acknowledged the importance of pay when he said the company does disclose compensation and benefits packages beforehand.When should a job seeker ask about money in an interviewByrnes could have handled this better too. First off, there are better ways of conducting salary negotiations than by email. Salary talks are a crucial part of the discussion for a new job, and talking in person gives candid ates the ability to judge the facial expressions and tone of the executive on the other side of the negotiation.For Byrnes next SkipTheDishes interview, some career coaches advised waiting until the job offer is secured to ask about money.You dont want to be negotiating salary until theyre at their maximum love- their maximum enthusiasm for you, Sarah Stamboulie, a former human resources manager for Morgan Stanley and Nortel Networks said. As a job seeker, you have the fruchtwein leverage when an employer tells you youre their first choice. Thats the momentwhen you press that advantage and ask for the salary you want. There will be a back-and-forth after that, but the goodwill from previous interviews will bolster your case.Nick Corcodilos, a Silicon Valley headhunter, said that above all, if youre asking about salary, do your research about whats an appropriate salary range. It may have helped Byrnes if she had not just asked about salary and benefits, but also justified what added value she could bring to the job - which is, again, a task better left off email.
